MEMBERS PICTURES / Coopers Hawk show
« Last post by GrizG on Today at 10:21:44 AM »
The other evening my family and I watched a rather interesting show put on a by a coopers hawk. My son noticed the hawk land in a mulberry tree about 25 yards from the house so we all looked. At least a half dozen times the hawk dropped to the ground, grabbed an earthworm, and then returned to the tree. At times the hawk was within about 40 feet of the house and we could see the worms squirming around before disappearing into the hawk. I had no idea hawks ate earthworms!

What made things even more interesting was that I noticed a robin sitting in the mulberry tree a bit above and behind the hawk's perch. The robin was making quite a racket the whole time. I joked that the robin must have been upset with the hawk for taking the worms. At one point the hawk flew to a neighbor's tree and the robin took off and flew right after it. At that point I was thinking the worms were an appetizer for the main course!  It wasn't long however before the hawk came back to resume its perch and the robin was right behind it.  A few more worms later and the hawk flew down into the woods with the robin in hot pursuit. That was the last we saw of either of them.

We suspect there might be a robin's nest in the mulberry tree or the tall yews next to it. What other explanation would there before for a robin challenging and going after a hawk?
